ATS Pistol Courses

American tactical Systems: Basic pistol SAFETY course

This is the basic pistol permit class all applicants need to complete in order to obtain their permit. Please note, at this time  Albany, Fulton, Greene, Rensselaer and Schenectady counties accept this class. Check with your issuing agency if you are not a resident of one of these counties to determine if this course will be accepted. This offering is a classroom based course that runs approximately 4 hours. Attendees will gain a familiarity and working knowledge of the different types of pistols they may encounter once they are issued their permit. The instructors will also discuss safety, legalities, the penal code and the safe act as they will pertain to you once issued a permit. This is not a hands on course; as per NYS Law permit applicants are not allowed to handle a pistol. This class is given by one of our on staff, NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructors.  Seats fill quickly so be sure to reserve yours as soon as you are cleared to take the class.

Cost is $75.

-As a side note, Albany County Residents who are in the "Application process" may, "under the supervision of an NRA Certified Instructor handle a pistol". That means that once you are a permit applicant, you can take a lesson with one of our instructors and use your pistol or one of our rentals.

First Steps - beginning shooter

Here it is the class everybody has been asking for! This class is the perfect launching point for all new pistol shooters as they learn the techniques required to become a safe and proficient shooter.

First Steps is the course that covers the skill sets needed to make you an effective shooter. All the fundamentals of operating your pistol will be covered in detail followed by comprehensive live fire time on the range. We will cover safe handling, proper stance and grip, sight picture, trigger pull, and loading magazines.  Whether this is your first pistol, you've just received your permit or you'd like to brush up on fundamentals....this is the course.

This class is for the NYS Pistol Permit Holder who is in the process of petitioning their county to have their restrictions lifted. With a combination of both Classroom and Range time , this class will cover firearms safety and operation, laws pertaining to firearms, concealed carry techniques and equipment, and a qualification course.  The instructors will cover mindset and responsibilities, drawing from concealment, presentation, and scenarios.  This class will serve as the NYS Unrestricted Pistol Permit certification/qualification course.  Additionally, this class is certified as the Rensselaer County Advanced Pistol Safety Course.

You will need to bring with you to the class the following : Serviceable handgun with either an inside or outside the waistband holster (strong side), an extra magazine and a shirt or jacket that covers your firearm. Ammo must be purchased at the range.

Duration: 4 hours.

Cost: $75.00 per student plus ammunition.

Intro to Defensive Handgun

This class is the perfect launching point for all beginner and intermediate shooters as they learn the techniques required to become a safe and proficient shooter with a defensive mindset. Students will spend an hour in the classroom before moving to the range to work on skills and drills. We will cover holster location(s), points of the draw, trigger press, various courses of fire, target identification, reloading and clearing malfunctions.

Prerequisite: 1St Steps or Similar experience (Students should be able to load & unload their firearm and have some live fire experience-if you do not feel comfortable with how your firearm functions and have a beginner level understanding of basic shooting fundamentals please enroll in our FIRST STEPS course now!!!)

Requirements: Centerfire handgun of your choice (sorry no .22), holster, at least one additional magazine with mag carrier and 150 rounds of ammo.

Defensive Handgun 2

This course follows our Intro to Defensive Handgun course and is the second step our our four part small group instructional series.  In Defensive Handgun 2 we build upon the fundamentals covered in the  Intro class and introduce new skillsets including:

·         Holster placement

·         Drawing from the holster

·         Shooting on the move

·         Strong hand/Support Hand

·         Clearing Malfunctions

·         Practical scenario based courses of fire.

Pre-Requisite- Intro to Defensive Handgun or similar experience; students should have experience drawing from the holster and firing multiple round courses of fire. Should you not feel comfortable with these skillsets enroll in our Intro to Defensive Handgun course.

Gear Requirements:

·         Modern functioning centerfire handgun

·         2 magazines and mag carrier

Self Defense Tactics and Techniques


Have you ever had that uneasy feeling about the person who steps into the elevator with you, the group of kids walking toward you in the parking lot or the guy walking behind you on the sidewalk? Have you ever asked yourself what could I, what should I do if I were attacked in one of these scenarios?

Then welcome to Intro to Defensive Tactics, where we will provide you with; the knowledge, skills and tactics to defend yourself. A few of the new things you will learn are weapon retention and disarming techniques. This class is not intended to teach you how to shoot it is intended to aid you in threat assessment, deterrent and if all else fails tactics for self- preservation.

This is a 3 hour class combining classroom and range time. Please bring a properly functioning firearm either revolver or semi automatic with a holster.

ATS Carbine Courses

Carbine 1 “Know Your Rifle” is the ground floor course to put you on the path to becoming a proficient and capable AR platform operator. Carbine 1 covers nomenclature, field stripping, operation, loading and unloading drills, and firing your rifle. You will also learn about adding auxiliary equipment to your AR to make it more operator friendly. Any AR shooter will benefit from covering the fundamentals. 

Course duration is about 3 hours and will be presented by ATS Instructors John Becker / Mike Givney. Both instructors have trained countless operators in their capacity as SWAT team leaders and instructors. Cost is $90.

Carbine 2

The next level of operation of your AR.

With their experience training hundreds of tactical operators and over 400 high risk callouts as SWAT team leaders during their extensive careers in law enforcement, Mike Givney and John Becker have developed a series of AR rifle classes to train you in the techniques and tactics needed in competition or an armed encounter.

Skillset 2 will cover reloads, malfunction drills, multiple rounds on target, multiple targets, move and shoot, and shooting from different positions. We will also go over field stripping and maintenance.

Saratoga County Concealed Carry Prep Class

Please note: This class is NOT the class you need to complete in order to obtain your Unrestricted Pistol Permit in Saratoga County. This class has been developed in response to the concerns of numerous county residents who are preparing to take the evaluation class but are unsure of what to expect.

This class will

  • Help prepare you to successfully complete your evaluation.
  • Combine Classroom and Range time
  • Teach you proper loading and unloading of your magazines and firearm
  • Address and properly deal with malfunctions
  • Explain the course of fire and associated requirements for completing it
  • Address Safe handling of your firearm in general and while on the range
  • Run you thru an actual live fire drill of the current course of fire
  • Offer techniques and drills to improve your accuracy

You will need to bring with you

  • A centerfire pistol either Semi Automatic or Revolver with a barrel length of 8” or less.
  • A strong side holster either inside or outside the waist band.
  • 2 extra magazines or speed loaders
  • Eye and ear protection

This 2 ½ hour class will be an intensive, rigorous and detail oriented course to help you get your unrestricted permit. Participants can expect to shoot 100-150 rounds while on the range. You will be under the direct supervision of one of our Master Instructors and a range safety officer at all times. They will be watching for, addressing and correcting any unsafe behavior that they may witness.

Space will be limited to a maximum of 8 students per session in order to ensure everyone receives plenty of assistance from the instructor.

Get your concealed carry for Utah with reciprocity/recognition in over 30 states. A great addition to your resume for having your restrictions lifted on your NY permit. You can take this class even if you do not have a New York State Pistol Permit. We will take your photo and fingerprints so you'll have everything you need to apply for your permit. $100 per person. Please call to reserve a seat as this class fills very quickly.

Exciting new offering!!

Attendees of our Utah Non Resident CCW course can now add a Florida Non Resident CCW Permit, further extending your carry options across this great country. Since the classroom portions of both states are nearly identical except for some legal considerations we are able to combine both into one course. The sole difference is that Florida requires us to observe you handling and shooting your firearm. After the classroom portion winds up those who wish to obtain their Florida permit (and have a NYS Pistol Permit) may go to the range with the instructor and run through a standardized course of fire. The additional cost for the Florida permit is $35 per person.


Intro to Defensive Shotgun #1

Develop your defensive shotgun skills with the ATS Defensive Shotgun #1 course!

Learn the operation of your gun and build confidence in your shooting skills. Practice the proper techniques for loading, unloading, deploying, and keeping your shotgun in tactical ready condition. We will cover using buckshot and slugs, patterning your personal gun and the selection of the proper ammunition. Range time will also give you experience on single and multiple targets, tactical reloads, and ammo change-out.

Requirements: 12 or 20 gauge shotgun capable of holding at least 5 rounds and without a pistol grip.  Your shotgun should be equipped with a sling. Please bring your own eye and hearing protection. The cost of the course now includes ammunition.

Maximum attendees - 8 Pre-registration Required $125.00



Learn the tactics and techniques you will need to use your shotgun in a dynamic environment. This course is geared towards those who want to deploy their shotgun for home defense and competitive events. Tactical reloads, malfunctions, use of lights, engaging targets, threat assessment and moving with your shotgun are all topics that will be covered. This class combines both classroom time and practical range time. Attendees must have a working knowledge of how to load and operate their personal shotgun. Preferably participants have already taken the Level 1 course. This course is designed for 12 and 20 gauge pump action or semi-automatic shotguns.  Duration is approximately 3 hours.

Pre-registration is required. 8 people per class. $125 ammo included.


  • Armed guards must complete an Annual Firearms Training course which includes a classroom refresher on the Use of Force followed by a written examination, and weapons qualification which includes a proficiency examination. The guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of his or her armed guard registration.

NRA Refuse to be a victim

The single most important step toward ensuring your own safety is having a personal safety strategy in place before you need it. NRA’s Refuse To Be A Victim® program teaches the tips and techniques you need to be alerted to dangerous situations and to avoid becoming a victim. Seminars are held across the nation and are open to men and women of all ages.  This is NOT a firearms course, but rather focuses on mindset, awareness and personal defensive strategies.  American Tactical Systems is proud to now offer this sought after course.  The 4 hour Refuse to Be a Victim course will be taught by Certified Instructor, Lori Givney. 

Student packets will be provided but registration on the NRA website is required.

firearms MAINTENANCE - Pistol

So you've got your new pistol, it shoots like a dream and you want to keep it that way. Well, pistols are just like cars - they need to be properly maintained in order to provide a life time of reliable service. However, the thought of breaking down your pistol is a terrifying thought, there are all those small parts and springs not to mention you're not even sure where to start or what to do once you start. Let us help you learn the right way and with the proper techniques. We cover checking that the firearm is safe and clear, field stripping, cleaning, lubricating, reassembling and function testing. You are encouraged to bring your own cleaning supplies if you have them or you can purchase them at the retail shop. You'll need to preregister for this class and let us know what firearm you will be bringing so we can tailor the class for you. The cost is only $25.

NRA Personal Protection in the Home

This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and provides information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. It satisfies all of the training requirements to obtain your Virginia concealed carry permit and gives explicit step by step directions to do so. At the end you will receive a course completion certificate good for life that is suitable for framing. This is a great class for men and women, new or seasoned shooters!!
